In this article you will find the most important baby grooming essentials.
You should always have these things on hand as a parent of a baby or a toddler since you’ll have to use them quite often.
THERMOMETER
It’s really important to have a high quality thermometer in a household with a baby.
Investing in a fast and accurate one is worth it.
There are a lot of types of thermometers on the market these days :
AXILLARY THERMOMETER (UNDERARM)
This type of thermometer is placed against the skin in the armpit.
+ works best in toddlers who can cooperate and hold it in place without moving
+ easier to use than rectal thermometer
– less accurate
RECTAL THERMOMETER
AAP recommends rectal thermometers, because research shows they are the most accurate and measure the core body temperature the best.
EAR AND FOREHEAD THERMOMETER
+ convenient placing against infant’s forehead or in the ear
+ easy to use
– less accurate than rectal thermometer
ORAL THERMOMETER
Oral thermometers can be used with kids who are able to cooperate.
+ accurate
– children have to keep the thermometer under their tongue for a minute to get an accurate reading
BULB SYRINGE
Bulb syringes help you clear your baby’s stuffed-up nose, which will make it easier for her to sleep, eat and mostly breathe.
It’s really easy to use a bulb syringe.
First you have to squeeze the air out of the bulb to create a vacuum. Then really gently you insert thee rubber tip into one nostril of your baby. Slowly release the bulb to suction out mucus. Remove the syringe and squeeze it to expel the mucus into a tissue. Wipe it and repeat the process for the other nostril.
BABY COMBS & BRUSHES
The market is full of beautiful combs and brushes for babies.
There’s not much to discuss about it, everyone understands how brushes work. Still they are one of the most important grooming essentials.
BABY NAIL CLIPPERS
Baby fingernails may need trimming as often as once a week.
You should cut your baby’s nails whenever they are long enough to scratch you or themselves.
Maybe you expected the list to be much longer.
As I first time mom I bought some many things for my baby which I thought to be useful. I was obsessing a bit as baby grooming is critical.
We ended up using probably only 1/3 of all purchased goods.
Don’t stress too much, buy what’s the most important and if you later on find out you need some more things, you can just buy them 🙂
Be strong mamas!
